Evidence for crustal seismic anisotropy at the InSight lander site

چکیده
We analyzed broadband and low-frequency events recorded on Mars made the first detection of horizontally polarized shear wave reflections, which help constrain crustal structure at NASA's InSight lander site. Coherent signals from five well-recorded marsquakes appear to be independent focal depth are consistent with SH-wave reflections off topmost interface (8 ± 2 km). This phase confirms existence ∼8 km in crust large speed (or impedance) contrast across it. The range acceptable parameters determined detected differs majority vertically models resulting a previous receiver function study, indicating that velocity waves is larger than waves. propose this inconsistency results presence seismic anisotropy within top layer Modeling show dry- or liquid-filled cracks/fractures igneous intrusions can reproduce observed radial anisotropy. • Detection SH-reflections under lander. متن کاملConstraining Crustal Anisotropy by Receiver Functions at the Deep Continental Drilling Site KTB in Southern Germany
As one of the rare observational tools for studying deformation and stress within the Earth, seismic anisotropy has been one of the focuses of geophysical studies over the last decade. In order to unravel the anisotropic properties of the crust, the teleseismic receiver functions (RF) methodology has started to be widely applied recently. Such effects of anisotropy on RF were illustrated in the...

متن کاملAsthenospheric channeling of the Icelandic upwelling: Evidence from seismic anisotropy
Two end-member geometries, radial flow and ridge-channeled flow, have been proposed for the dispersion of material upwelling beneath Iceland. Seismic anisotropy provides information on mantle flow, and therefore has the potential to discriminate these two geometries. In this study, we combine the HOTSPOT and SIL datasets (39 stations) and select 28 events for teleseismic shear-wave splitting an...
متن کاملEstimating crustal seismic anisotropy with a joint analysis of radial and transverse receiver function data
S U M M A R Y We developed an integrated technique for estimating crustal anisotropy with a horizontal axis using radial (R) and transverse (T) receiver functions. The technique includes computing three individual and one joint objective function (JOF) and a reliability analysis of the estimated anisotropy. The individual objective functions (IOFs) are designed to: (1) maximize the peak energy ...
